C1.1 - Fundamental Ideas Flashcards
What substances, and about how many, are shown in the periodic table?
About 100 elements.
What are elements made from?
One type of atom.
What are used to represent atoms?
Chemical symbols.
What do elements in the same group have in common?
They have similar properties.
What do compounds contain?
More than one element.
What is the nucleus of an atom made from?
Protons and neutrons.
What charges do the three major subatomic particles have?
- Protons (+1)
- Neutrons (0)
- Electrons (-1)
Why are atoms neutral?
They have the same number of protons and electrons.
Their charges cancel each other out.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
How are elements arranged on the periodic table?
They are arranged by their atomic numbers.
What is the mass number?
The total number of particles in the nucleus.
Protons + Neutrons = Mass Number
How are energy levels represented?
As electron shells.
What does the group show, on the periodic table?
How many electrons are in the outer energy level (electron shell) in an atom.
What is special about the noble gases?
They have very stable arrangements of electrons.
The outer shell is full of electrons.
This makes the noble gases unreactive.
Between what types of elements is an ionic bond formed?
A metal and a non-metal.
