C11 Flashcards
How Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O) are created
Through complete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels
How is carbon monoxide produced
Made hydrocarbonate fuels a result of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbonate fuels
How is sulfur dioxide produced
Sulfur reacts with oxygen during combustion to give me sulfur dioxide
How are nitrogen oxides produced
High temperatures of the engine cause nitrogen in the air to react with oxygen in the air
Equation for nitrogen oxide
N²+ 2O² -> 2NO²
Equation for sulfur dioxide
S(s) + O² -> SO²
How soot (unburned fuel) is produced
If diesel doesnt completely burn out (incomplete combustion), tiny solid partciles of carbon (soot) is produced
Effects of Carbon Dioxide & Water Vapour to the world
- Greenhouse gases
- Cause global warming -> climate change
Effects of Carbon monoxide
Binds haemoglobin in your red blood cells instead of CO²
Effects of Sulfur Dioxide & Nitrogen Oxides
- Respiratory problems
- Acid rain (kills wildlife & samages buildings)
Effects of soot
- Lung damage
- Global dimming
