C1.1 Flashcards
How are solids arranged?
Solids are arranged in rows, in a regular pattern
How are liquids arranged?
Random and close
How are gas particles arranged?
Random and far apart
What are the relative distances between particles in a solid?
Particles in a solid are very close.
What are the relative distances between particles in a liquid?
Particles in a liquid are close together, touching many of their neighbours.
What are the relative distances between particles in a gas?
Particles in a gas are widely spaced meaning they can be easily compressed or squashed.
How do particles in a solid move?
They vibrate about fixed positions.
How do particles in a liquid move?
They move around each other.
How do particles in a gas move?
They move quickly in all directions
What are particles?
Everything is made from matter. A particle is a tiny bit of matter.
What do chemists mean when they talk about particles?
Chemists are scientists that study chemistry. When chemists talk about particles they usually mean atoms ions and molecules.
Why can you not compress particles in a solid or liquid state?
There is no space for the particles to move into.
Why cant particles in a solid flow?
In solids there is a strong force of attraction between the molecules and the space between them is very negligible. The molecules are therefore, not free to move.
What is a physical change?
A physical change is generally reversible. No new substance is made.
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change is difficult or impossible to reverse. 1 or more new substances are made.
