C1.1, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8 Flashcards
Definition of An atom, it’s radius and it’s nucleus
The smallest part of an element you can get, it’s radius is around 0.1nm and it’s nucleus is around 1/10,000 of its radius
Element
An element only contains one type of atom
Compounds
2 or more elements chemically joined together
Proton: Location, Relative mass and Electrical charge
Location: Nucleus, Relative mass: 1, Electrical charge: +1
Neutron: Location, Relative mass and electrical charge
Location: Nucleus, Relative mass: 1, Electrical charge: 0
Electron: Location, Relative mass and electrical charge
Location: Electron cloud around nucleus, Relative mass: 1/1836, Electrical charge: -1
Atomic number
The number of protons in an atom (sometime called the proton number)
Mass number
Number of protons plus the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Ion
An ion is an atom that has gained or lost electrons and is now changed
Isotopes
Atoms with the same atomic number but not atomic mass, they may have differeing physical properties such as density
