C11 Flashcards
plastics
made of polymers- very big molecules
small units used to make polymers = monomers
reaction used to make a polymer is called polymerisation
addition polymerisation
addition polymer formed when thousands of alkene molecules join together
double covalent bond opens up, beocmes a single C-C bond.
polymer formed, only one product formed in the reaction.
repeating unit of the polymer has the same atoms as the monomer.
poly(alkene)
differences between addition and condensation polymerisation
ADDITION / CONDENSATION
only 1 product formed / 2 different products formed(polymer + small molecule, usually water)
monomers usually the same alkene, / often 2 different monomers used, each monomer has a functional group at
containg C-C double bonds both ends, functional groups on 2 different monomers react to form polymer
examples of condensation polymers
polyester and nylon
forming a polyester
diol and dicarboxylic acid
diol- an alcohol containing 2 OH groups
dicarboxylic acid- a carboxylic acid containing 2 COOH groups.
