C10 Metals Flashcards

1
Q

Define Alloys.

A

Mixture of metals (and sometimes nonmetals). These have very different properties to what they are made from. They are harder because their layers cannot slide over each other due to different size atoms disrupting the layer structure

3
Q

Give the uses of aluminium

A

Used in alloys for aircrafts as it is strong and has a low density, and used in food containers due to its waterproof oxide coating which prevents corrosion by the food.

Q

What is sacrificial protection?

A

A metal being protected by a more reactive metal so it can act as a protective layer against rust

Q

What is step 3 of the extraction of metals using carbon?

A

carbon monoxide reacts with iron oxide to form molten liquid iron.
3CO + Fe₂O₃ -> 2Fe + 3CO₂

17
Q

What process is used to extract metals that are more reactive than carbon?

A

Electrolysis
