C10 Metals Flashcards
Define Alloys.
Mixture of metals (and sometimes nonmetals). These have very different properties to what they are made from. They are harder because their layers cannot slide over each other due to different size atoms disrupting the layer structure
Define a displacement reaction.
A more reactive metal will take the place of a less reactive metal in a compound
Give the uses of aluminium
Used in alloys for aircrafts as it is strong and has a low density, and used in food containers due to its waterproof oxide coating which prevents corrosion by the food.
Give the uses of zinc
Used to galvanise steel or as sacrificial protection
Give the properties of transition metals
high density, used as catalysts, form coloured compounds
Give the properties of metals
Ductile, high tensile strength, malleable, sonorous, lustrous, good conductors of heat and electricity.
Define rust
When iron oxidises in the presence of oxygen and air
What is sacrificial protection?
A metal being protected by a more reactive metal so it can act as a protective layer against rust
Give the properties of alkali metals
low density, soft, react violently with water
Define corrosion
The breakdown of a metal from it’s environment
What is the ore of iron?
Hematite
What is the ore of copper?
Malachite
What is the ore of aluminium?
Bauxite
What is step 1 of the extraction of metals using carbon?
coke reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide
C + O₂ -> CO₂
What is step 2 of the extraction of metals using carbon?
Carbon dioxide reacts with more carbon in order to form Carbon monoxide
CO₂ + C -> 2CO
