C1- The atomic structure and the periodic table Flashcards
What do atoms contain?
Protons, neutrons and electrons.
What does the atomic number tell us?
How many protons the atom has.
How do you find out the number of neutrons in an atom?
atomic number - mass number.
What are isotopes?
Different forms of the same element, same amount of protons but a different amount of electrons.
What is a compound?
When elements react, atoms combine with other atoms to form compounds.
What is the differences between compounds?
Non metal compounds consist of molecules.
Compounds that contain a metal and non-metal consist of ions.
Give examples of the formulas for compounds.
CO2, NH3, H20
Name a difference between mixtures and compounds.
There’s no chemical bonds in a mixture.
How many electrons can the 1st, 2nd and 3rd shell contain.
1st: 2
2nd:8
3rd:8
What bonding is formed from a metal + metal?
Metallic bonding.
What bonding is formed from non-metal + metal?
Ionic bonding.
What bonding is formed from non-metal + non-metal?
Covalent bonding.
What gases are in group 0?
Noble gases.
What are the group 1 metals?
Alkali metals.
What do all group 1 metals give off when reacting?
Hydrogen.
What happens further down group 1?
Metals become more reactive.
What do group 1 metals react with?
Oxygen and chlorine.
Group 7 elements are called?
Halogens.
What happens further down group 7?
They get less reactive, have higher boiling points and have higher reactive atomic masses.
What ions do halogens form?
1- ions.
Group 0 elements all have what properties?
Colourless, inert gases. They all also have 8 electrons.
What happens further down group 0?
The boiling points increase and number of electrons increase.
Neon is a gas at 25 degrees. What state is helium at this temperature?
Helium has a lower boiling point so it must also be a gas at 25 degrees.
