What are policy development grants?
Allocations of £2 million to all main parties so they can employ policy advisors.
What is short money?
Money allocated to opposition parties for their work in the House of Commons. The leader of the opposition gets £800,000 to fund their office.

Subsidies to fund the work of opposition parties in the House of Lords.

What is a one-party system?
Where thee a number of different political parties but only one of them has ever held power, or has a chance of holding power.
What is a two-party system?
Where two main parties compete for power, and no other party had any reasonable chance of forming a government.
What is a multi-party system?
A number of parties compete to form the government. These systems often result in coalitions, and are much more likely to happen in systems which use proportional representation.
What is a two-and-a-half party system?
Two major parties dominate politics, while a third party is smaller than the two main parties, but larger than any of the other parties trailing behind.
What is a political party?
A group of people organised for the purpose of winning power by putting candidates up for election.
