C1 - Pests And Pest Management Flashcards
What is IPM and what was it developed for?
Integrated Pest Management
To better understand the complex biological system in which we use pesticides, and to effectively manage pests with a range of pest management tools
What are the three reasons for the development of IPM?
Sole reliance on pesticides has proven detrimental to the environment
Pests have developed resistance to chemicals
Applicators have spent more money than necessary for treatment
List the five steps of IPM
Detection Identification Economic significance Method selection Evaluation
What are the two types of pest controls
Natural control - does not rely on humans
Applied Controls - human controlled
List seven types of Applied control for pests
Mechanical - screens, filters, etc
Sanitation - remove and maintain breeding grounds
Chemical - pesticides which kill, repel, sterilize etc
Biological - introduce or encourage growth of plants and animals which are predators of pest (not applicable to us)
Cultural - prevent pests by means of operation (high flows for example)
Legal - restrict human activities
Resistant - animals or plants bred based on their resistance to a pest (not applicable)
What is Economic Injury Level
The level of pest density at which the cost to manage is equal to the losses that the pest causes
What is Economic Threshold
The density of pest where management action is needed to prevent the pest from reaching Economic Injury Level
How do you select a method of treatment?
After identifying, careful observation and consideration of all methods, being careful to weigh the environmental and economic impact
