people either thought heat was a mix of fire and air or some sort of invisible fluid

A
if you where to put a spoon in hot soup or coffee the heat would travel up the spoon so that is why people thought heat was an invisible fluid.

Why does it not make sense for heat to be a fluid?
A
If you were to put a spoon in a cup it doesn’t get heavier when heated (heat has no mass)
