C1-groups in the periodic table Flashcards
what is group 0 of the periodic table?
the noble gasses
do noble gasses have high boiling points?
no they have low ones
what us group 1 in the periodic table?
alkali metals
name 3 physical properties of an alkali metal
- are soft (they can be cut with a knife)
- have relatively low melting points
- have low densities
what does lithium do when added to water?
fizzes steadily; slowly becomes smaller until it disappears
what does sodium do when added to water?
fizzes rapidly; melts to form a ball; quickly becomes smaller until it disappears
what does potassium do when added to water?
Burns violently with sparks and a lilac flame; quickly melts to form a ball; disappears rapidly, often with a small explosion
explain the reactivity as you go down group one
they become more reactive because
- the atom becomes larger
- the outer electron becomes further away from the nucleus
- the force of attraction between the nucleus and the outer electron decreses
- the electron is lost easier
what is group 7 called?
the halogens
