notes on Black Panther

A

-female empowerment is deomnstrated throughout the film
-Oakland, CA is represented as a poor place, quite rough, and in contrast to Wakanda, which is represented as advanced and futuristic.
-side roles wearing more normal and less regal clothes
-use of props to signify the T’Challa is the king
-mystery connoted through visual codes for the secret club
-usage of an Asian coutnry for filming to help get movie screened in different countries.
-use of colour and props to signfiy things, semiotics, white for purity and one-sided window for interrogation.

Representation for I, Daniel Blake

A

-quite working class, works for their own house and possessions, doesn’t get anything handed down to them.
-job centre staff that aren’t helpful, alongside the benefits woman.
-mother gives up food for her children, act of selflessness
-represent poverty in an area due to long food bank queue
-represents food bank workers as kind and respectful, showing people are ‘human’.
stereotypes used are those of a grumpy, angry old man, and a greiving widow. Also they subvert the stereotype that job centre staff aren’t helpful, Anne.

Theory: Pleasure of genre for audiences

A

Emotional pleasures: the emotional pleasure offered to audiences of a genre films are particularly significant when they generate a strong audience response.
Visceral pleasures: Visceral pleasures are ‘gut’ responses and are defined by how the film’s stylistic construction elecits a physical effect upon it’s audience. This can be a feeling of revulsion, kinetic speed, ot a ‘roller coaster ride’.
Intellectual puzzles: certian films genres such as the thriller ot the ‘whodunit’ offer the pleasure in trying to unravel a mystery or a puzzle. Pleasure is derived from deciphering the plot and forecasting the end or the being surprised by the unexpected.

Context for Black Panther

A

-The 17th film in the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’, or MCU, which is the highest-grossing film franchise in history.
-Directed by Ryan Coogler, the director of ‘Creed’, and released in February 2018.
-The film shows us the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda, which has avoided European colonisation and achieved a technological superiority through the use of a mineral called Vibranium.

Media Industries for Black Panther

A

-The Black Panther Part (Oct 1966-82) was a political activist group established initially to provide armed montioring of polic behaviour and prevent police brutality in the US. It was quite controversial at the time.
-Genre has been mainly dominated by white male characters
-The #oscarssowhite hastag trended in 2016 due to a lack of diversity at the ceremony.
-US/European media tends to portray Africa as a under-privleged, developing continent
-Barack Obama, the US’ first African-American President provided initiatives to aid minority and women’s groups
-#Blacklivesmatter movement
-Disney adopted a ‘360’ marketing perspective for the moive, turning it into a cultural event.

Context for I, Daniel Blake

A

-I,Daniel Blake is an independant social realist film directed by renowned director Ken Loach (‘Kes’, etc.)
-A UK/French Co-production, it recieved funding from the BFI and BBC Films.
-It became Ken Loach’s highest-grossing film at the box office, taking over $8m, was highlty critically acclaimed and generated much debate due to the contemporary social and political issues addressed in the film.
-I,Daniel Blake was exhibited at many film festivals, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and was nominated for many awards including several BAFTAs.

-conveys a clear left-wing political message criticses specific government policies.
