C1 Data Analysis Flashcards
Index number for any time period
(Value in period / value in base period) * 100
Value on base year
100
What is a limitation of using a pie chart to represent data?
Not very effective for showing increases or decreases of proportions over time as trends are not shown.
Does not show casual relationships eg. The impact of advertising spending on sales revenue.
Benefit of using a pie chart to represent data
Pie charts present data clearly and visibly. Data can be understood much faster.
Benefit of using a bar chart to present data
Bar charts allow data to be presented in a clear format.
They summarise a large amount of data in a visual format.
Key values can be highlighted very quickly
Limitations of using a bar chart to present data
Bar chats can oversimplify data and further explanations may be needed to give an accurate analysis of the data.
Data can be manipulated to show false trends and patterns.
Difference between bar charts and histograms
Histograms show quantitative data and bar charts tend to show categorical data.
Benefits of a histogram
Shows the shape of the distribution for a large set of data.
Very good at displaying data which has chronological categories or numerical groupings.
Helps depict differences in the shape or symmetry of the data collected.
Limitations of a histogram
Cannot be used for exact values.
The effectiveness of the data decreases when the range of data is too wide.
Benefit of using index numbers
Helps to compare changes over time and makes the value of these changes clear.
Limitation of using index numbers.
Focuses on the change in data not the absolute levels.
