C1 - C5 Chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
Turn these ions to neutral atoms:
Na^+
Mg^2+
Fe^3+
Cl^-
S^2-
N^3-
A
Na+ Give 1 electron back to the ion
Mg2+ Give 2 electrons back to the ion
Fe3+ Give 3 electrons back to the ion
Cl- Take 1 electron away from the ion
S2- Take 2 electrons away from the ion
N3- Take 3 electrons away from the ion
2
Q
What is Electrolysis?
A
It is when an electric current is used to break down ionic compounds and turn them back into their elements.
3
Q
What do you need for Electrolysis?
A
- an electric power supply
- anode/cathode made of carbon
The positive electrode is called the anode.
The negative electrode is called the cathode.
4
Q
Where do the positive ions (cations) move during electrolysis?
A
They move to the Cathode (negative)
Opposites attract!
