C1:Atomic Structure not done Flashcards
what are all substances made up of
Atoms
How many groups are in the periodic table
8
What does each group contain
Elements with similar chemical properties
What do elements contain
Only one type of atom
What do compounds contain
More than one type of atom
What does an atom have in the centre
A nucleus
What is the nucleus surrounded by
Électrons
What doesn’t happen to atoms in reactions
No new atoms are created or destroyed
what does the total mass of reactants equal to
The total mass of products
What is on both sides of a balanced symbol equation
The same number of each type of atom
(s)
solids
(L)
Liquids
(G)
Gases
(Aq)
Aqueous solutions
What is a mixture
Two or more substances that aren’t chemically combined together
How can mixtures be separated
By physical means eg filtration, crystallisation, simple distillation
What is fractional distillation
An effective way of separating miscible liquids using a fractionating column, the separation is possible because of the different boiling points of the mixture
What is paper chromatography
Separates mixtures of substances dissolved in a solvent as they move up a piece of chromatography paper, the different substances are separated because of their different solubilities in the solvent used
