C1 - Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are the 3 subatomic particles that atoms are made up from?
Neutrons protons and electrons
What is an element?
Something made up of ONE atom
What is a compound?
Compounds contain two or more different elements combined chemically
What is a mixture?
A mixture has different elements but they aren’t chemically combined
What is a molecule?
A molecules has any elements chemically combined
What charge does a proton atom have?
+1
What charge does a neutron have?
No charge
What charge does a electron have?
-1
What are protons equal to?
Electrons
What does the bottom number tell you on the periodic table?
How many protons there are
How do you workout how many neutrons there are in an element?
You do: the atomic number - the mass number
What is an isotope?
An isotope has the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Work out how many protons neutrons electrons there are in: Boron Tin Silver Cobalt
Boron= P AND E= 5 N=6 Tin= P AND E= 50 N=69 Silver= P AND E= 47 N=61 Cobalt= P AND E= 27 N=32
What is an ion?
They are atoms that have an overall charge that have gained or lost electrons
What happens to a positive ion?
Loses electroms
