C1 - Atomic Structure Flashcards
Definition of Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance
What is the mass number?
An elements total number of protons and neutrons
What do the group numbers represent?
The number of electrons in the outer shell of the element
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in an element
What is the law of conservation of mass?
No atoms are lost or made in a chemical reaction
Why do atoms have no charge? (Neutral)
Because they contain the same number of positive protons and negative electrons
What is a subatomic particle?
A particle that is smaller than an atom in size, e.g. proton, neutron, and electron
What is an ion?
Charged particles that have either gained or lost electrons, making them either positively charged (cations) or negatively charged (anions).
What is an isotope?
Forms of an element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
What is the formula for relative atomic mass?
Sum of isotope mass X isotope abundance divided by 100
What atomic model did JJ Thompson create?
Plum pudding model
Who made the Planetary atomic model
Niels Bohr
Who made the Solid Sphere model?
John Dalton
Who made the Nuclear model?
Ernest Rutherford
Who made the Quantum atomic model?
Erwin Schrodinger
