C1 Flashcards
Atom
Smallest particle of an element
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Chemical Change
A change that produces new substances and is irreversible
Electron
A subatomic particle surrounding the nucleus of an atom. It is negatively charged and has a very small mass.
Electron shell
The space in which electrons are held orbiting the nucleus
Element
A substance consisting of atoms which have the same atomic number
Isotope
Atoms with the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons are isotopes of the same element
Mass number
The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron
A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom. It has no charge and a relative mass of 1
Physical change
A change such as a change in state that does not result in new substances being made. It is reversible
Proton
A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom. It has a positive charge.
