Background info the A-H and Serbia conflict

A

1912-13 there had been many local wars in the Balkans.

Serbia emerged as the most powerful country in the Balkans and A-H wanted to crush them.

A

The BEF were led by sir John French.
Landed in France on 23rd August.
The allied troops were led by lieutenant Douglas haig and used Lee Enfield.303 rifles - Germans thought they were against machine gun fire.

Aircraft: French gained air superiority, caught german land.
Artillery: after weeks of it the French failed to recapture lost territory from Germans.

Gas shells: disabled French soldiers.

Artillery: didn’t kill German
Creeping barage: successful, unseen to enemy (Germans).
Aircraft: made useless by the weather.
The tank: effective, hard to shoot at.
Machine guns: halted French fire.
Offensive mining: shells at Lochnagar detonated 7.28 on 1 July 1916.

Passchendaele

A

Artillery: killed 10,000 german soldiers, destroyed British mining.
Offensive mining: attack on messines ridge where 19 mines were exploded at one - took 3hrs for brits to take german positions.
Approx 325,000 allied lost.

Vimy Ridge: a victory for Canadians, took 4000 german soldiers.
Dug tunnels, element of surprise.
Cambrai: by evening brits had gained 9km of territory + taken 8000 prisoners. Lots of tanks deployed, 476 with infantry, poison gas too.

1917: Little Willie, fumes made crew sick.
Used first in battle of Somme.
Mark V: only needed 1 driver not 4.
Mark IV: lors of armour, middle of war.
‘Whippet’: 1918 battle of Amiens. 3 crew.
