Polis
The Greek word for a city-state is polis (PAH-luhs)

Democracy, a type of government which people people rule themselves

Rich landowners, or aristocrats
Oligarchy
A government in which only a few people have power is called an oligarchy
Citizens
Citizens, people who had the right to participate in government
Tyrant
Tyrant, which meant a leader who held power through the use of force
Pericles
Pericles (PER-uh-kleez). He led the government from about 460 BC until his death in 429 BC.
Mythology
Mythology-a body of stories about gods and heroes that try to explain how the world works.
Homer
Among the earliest Greek writings are two great epic poems, the LLiad and the Odyssey
Sappho
Sappho (SAF-oh). Her poems were beautiful and emotional
Aesop
Aesop (EE-sahp), (for example) is famous for his fables
Fables
Fables are short stories that teach the reader lessons about life or give advice on how to live
Influence
These two civilizations influenced the entire Aegean religion and helped shape later cultures in Greece.
