Tension that broke out due to frustration because of taxes. It was a mass chaos that attempted to dethrone Justinian. It was put down and thousands of people died.

Most famous example of Byzantine architecture, it was built under Justinian I and is considered one of the most perfect buildings in the world.

A collection of laws that reflected Christian values created by Justinian

an alphabet derived from the Greek alphabet and used for writing Slavic languages

a person sent on a religious mission, especially one sent to promote Christianity in a foreign country.

A follower of a polytheistic religion in ancient times.

Means following established beliefs. Mainly focused on carrying out traditions and beliefs outlined in the Bible.

Means for the people. Most people spoke Latin.
Great Schism
the official split between the Roman Catholic and Byzantine churches that occurred in 1054. Sometimes called the East-West Schism. The church in the west became known as the Roman Catholic Church, while the church in the east became known as the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Head of the Roman Catholic Church

The most important leaders of the church. This was often the bishops of the five most important cities of the empire.
