Who and when was the Monroe Doctrine established?
In 1823 President James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, in his yearly speech to the Congress and the American people stated his vision for US Foreign Policy.
Proclamation of Neutrality
A proclamation stating that the US would not take part in the problems of other countries.
Isolationism
Isolationism was non involvement in world affairs.
Expansionism
Expansionism is the expansion of territory.
Imperialism
Imperialism is the policy by which strong countries extend their political, military and economic control over weaker territories. .

Policies that guide the relationships with other countries.

An excess of supply.
open door policy
The idea that all countries around the world should have equal rights to sea ports.
Dawrinism
The belief of survival of the fittest.
Social Dawrinism
Social darwinism is the belief by Herbert Spencer of survival of the fittest among nations, and that certain nations and races were destined to rule over less fit ones.
Annexation
A formal act where one country claims dominance over another country.
Seward’s Folly
This saying was used by JOurnalists and referred to the buying from Russia of Alaska for 7.2million dollars. Many in the US wondered why the US and the secretary of state William H Seward would want a vast tundra of snow and ice 1000 miles north of its mian border.
Pan-American Highway System
A network of roads stretching across the Americas. They total to 30,000km long. Stretches from Alaska to the tip of Argentina. It was a dream that allowed goods to travel across America.
Alfred T. Mahan
Alfred T mahan was a military historian and an officer in the US navy. He played an important role in transforming America into a naval power. In The Influence of SeaPower Upon History, he suggested that many great nations owed their greatness to naval power. He said that sea control was crucial to a nation in wartime. Influenced by Mahan, the US expanded its navy by building battleships and grew to the third largest navy in the world by 1900.
