A

Alfred T mahan was a military historian and an officer in the US navy. He played an important role in transforming America into a naval power. In The Influence of SeaPower Upon History, he suggested that many great nations owed their greatness to naval power. He said that sea control was crucial to a nation in wartime. Influenced by Mahan, the US expanded its navy by building battleships and grew to the third largest navy in the world by 1900.

Queen Liliuokalani

A

A Hawaiian nationalist who was the queen of Hawaii. The queen hated the white plantation owners who had come from the USA and who took the majority of Hawaii’s land for themselves. The queen’s goal was to restore Hawaii to what it was before the plantation owners came. She was overthrown by the US government and Hawaii was annexed by the US in 1898.

What did the Monroe Doctrine State?

A
  1. the United States would not interfere in the internal affairs of or the wars between European powers;
  2. the United States recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies (and dependencies) in the Western Hemisphere;
  3. the Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization;
  4. any attempt by a European power to oppress or control any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States.
