Government
Government refers to ‘political authority’. A group of people who have the power to make and enforce laws for a country or an area.
3 different types of governments
Local
National
Provincial
Part of government that consists of several entities or parties that rule the country. It is made up of three divisions.
The National Assembly
(Members of parliament)
The Executive committee
(Ministers)
Public departments
(i.e. Department of education)
ROLE OF THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
•Makes and implements laws
•Collects revenue (income) from taxes and uses money to provide services & infrastructure.
•Prepares the national budget.
•The president co-ordinates the work of the government and provides direction and strategic support.
PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
Part of government that is responsible for the running of a province
ROLE OF THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
•Have the right to make provincial laws, but
must be in line with national laws and approved by national government.
•Prepares provincial budget based on the specific needs of the province.
•Also collect their own revenue
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Part of government that is responsible for the running of municipalities.
GOVERNMENT ROLE IN BUSINESSES & HOUSEHOLDS
Ensure that they operate in a fair & viable environment .
Provide infrastructure.
Receive taxes from & provide essential services.
Receive labour, capital & natural resources from households.
