Bushfires Flashcards
3 ways fight fires
Cutting oxygen supply, Removing fuel and Reducing temperature
How do bushfires start?
Lightning, deliberate, uncontrolled burnoffs, campfires, cigarettes, unknown, machinery, prescribed burn escapes, public utilities, and more
How does fire spread?
Radiation, Convection, Conduction
Radiation
A form of heat energy that travels in straight lines in all directions from its source.
Convection
The transfer of heat through air, causing that air to rise faster as it heats up
Conduction
The transfer of heat through through an object from a region of higher heat to a region of lower temperature.
For every ____ of slope fire speed doubles
10 degrees
Crown Fire
They have large flames and intense heat which can reach temperatures of 1100 degrees.
They burn from the treetops and spread quickly.
Surface Fire
The most common place for fire, it burns things like dry leaf litter, twigs and branches on the ground. Surface fires are the easiest to control and they burn at 900 degrees
Ground Fire
Fires that burn organic material in the soil. It’s a slow burning fire which is usually under litter or vegetation. These fires smoulder and burn for the longest time.
