Lethal Consequences of Burns to Body

  1. Severe loss of fluids from exposed tissue and blood (leads to death)
  2. Circulatory Shock(reduced blood volume causes organs to start to die)
  3. Renal Failure
  4. Inadequate nutrients to replace lost proteins and electrolytes
  5. Infection
  6. Diminished Immune System

Burn Classifications

A
  1. First-degree: Damage to epidermis only Ex: mild burn or sunburn
  2. Second-degree: Damage to epidermis and upper dermis (blisters, edema/swelling) *Most painful
  3. Third-degree: Complete destruction of epidermis and dermis and partial destruction of
    hypodermis

It is important because the total burn area % is used to calculate how much fluid needs to be replaced.
