Burns and Skin Healing Flashcards
Lethal Consequences of Burns to Body
- Severe loss of fluids from exposed tissue and blood (leads to death)
- Circulatory Shock(reduced blood volume causes organs to start to die)
- Renal Failure
- Inadequate nutrients to replace lost proteins and electrolytes
- Infection
- Diminished Immune System
Burn Classifications
- First-degree: Damage to epidermis only Ex: mild burn or sunburn
- Second-degree: Damage to epidermis and upper dermis (blisters, edema/swelling) *Most painful
- Third-degree: Complete destruction of epidermis and dermis and partial destruction of
hypodermis
What are partial thickness burns?
First degree & Second degree
What is a full thickness burn?
Third degree
What is the most important reason for the Rule of Nines?
It is important because the total burn area % is used to calculate how much fluid needs to be replaced.
Estimating is based on 12 body areas, each accounting for 9% of total
body area:
a. 9% for head (4 1/2 % per side)
b. 36% for trunk (18% per side)
c. 18% for arms (9% per arm, both sides)
d. 36% for legs (18% per leg, both sides)
e. 1% for perineum
A 2nd degree burn is considered critical if…….
it covers 25% or more of the body
A 3rd degree burn is considered critical if……
it covers 10% or more
Except: Any % of 3rd degree on face, hand, feet and perineal.
