How many people were burned, who and where?
Nearly 300, 51 were women, the most burnings were in the south-east, London, Canterbury + Colchester
What were the impacts of the burnings?
Often public spectacles
Foxe gives the impression that the martyrs in London were supported by the crowds
Some have suggested that those who went to watch the burnings were so impressed by the dedication of those being burned that they converted
Apart from London, there is no evidence that there was a strong reaction to the burnings
Where did most of the persecution take place?
In the south east, there was a greater concentration of protestants in that area
Regions further away from London were less susceptible to pressure from central government
Why were there delays in persecution?
The declaration of war against France in 1557
Argued that there was little enthusiasm for the persecution, it was only because of the pressure from central gov that local authorities responded
How did the burnings impact Mary?
Argued that it damaged her popularity
Created the image of ‘Bloody Mary’
