40 in base 30 in experimental
aged 20-81
answerd 6 questions to check psychological wellbeing
screened out if they had mental health/anxiety or drug dependency issues
screened out if they attnted more tahn 2 psychology lectures

procedure

A

base condition repliaction of milgram 5
rigged draw teacher always the pptp confederate always the learner
pptp saw learner being strapped and seated into electric shock area
same generator used as milgrams goes up to 450v
sat in adjacent rooms
shocks start at 15v rather than 45v like milgrams original
teacher gets told that learner has haert problems , told taht it wont cause any pain to them
teachers asks 25 mpcs and learner gets shocked for every wrong answer
at 75v learner makes sound of pain and pre recorder prods from milgram play
at 150v learner cries and says his heart hurts
if pptps wants to continue burger shuts down the exp and gives debrief telling them the shocks are fake

modelled refusal stage
2 teachers 1 learner
one of the teacher is a confderate and 1 the real pptp
draw rigged as usual
same procdeure as base gets told abt heart probelms
teacher 1 confderate adminsters the shocjs whilst teacher 2 the real pptp sits and watcjes the shocks being adminstered
at 75v learner makes sound and eacher hesistaes to admdinster a shock
at 90v twacher 1 says idk abt this and refused to carry om
teacher 2 then asked to continue wity iy

results

A

baseline

30% stopped at 150v or less
70% continued at 150v

experimental
36% stopped
63% comtinued

milgram original

65% contuined
in milgrams 150v was the point of nonreturn for those who continued up to 450v

a strength is its mote represetantive than milgrams, milgrms was all males, males could be perceived as being more psychologically robust and milgrams sample was androcentric
in burgers 2/3 were females , 41 pptps were females doible the number of males, 20-81
this creates a wider target population to be able to genralise to, makimgb the study more repsenative of all the types of people are likely to obey
however was volunteer sampling may not be succesfull in reachingb a wide range of people, ppl who look at the newsaper only
30% ofmoriginalpptps removed not generlisable to the emotonally weak or those who have studied psych

burger used a standaridez procedure, mostly repliacted from ligram however tweaks made to make it more ethical
milgram 5 used, pptps paod $50,
rigged draw, shown learner being starpped in, told abt heart problems
same generator as milgram, started at 15v as comapred to milgrams 45, given 3 cahnces to withdraw, 25mpcs shocked if weong answwer
in model refusal, 2 twachers one fake one real pptps, at 75 volts fake teacher hesistaes to continue,
at 90v refuses to conyinue , 4 prods used aswell
if pptps want to cntinue aftwr 150v burger shuts down and gived debrief taht shocks were fake

this increases the reliabialty of teh study as it means results from both conditoos can be comapred as everyone epxerinvce the smae procedufe and tasks, this allows for obedinace to be looked at from both watching other ppl refuse but also if ppls obey if conditiosn are more ethical

demonstartes hwo obedinace to authority works
in the basse condition 30% refused where 70% comtinued after the prods were used to oush pptps to carry on, this can be used in schs were teachers use their authority to get children to do their work using prods,
hut pptps stopepd before distress doesnta bccunt for real life situations

A

the studys lack ecological validty as it doesnt replicate day to day life and day to day settings and tasks.
pptps hav to give shocks to a heart patients if they get an answwer weong, typically the punishment wud be a shout or help rather tahn a physical punishment.therefore the task is artifical as we wudnt shock ppl in real life.

however high interal valoidty, extraneous vraiables kept controlled ,
ptpps with mental health/ anxiety / drug dependancy wwre ruled out, those who knew abt milgrama nd those who ahd done two psychological lectures alson exclided, research assitant followed up on whether they knew abt milgram,
raises internal validty as it means tehres no dc

burger had replicted milgram but in a more ethical way, reducinh psych harm to ptpps he debrief the study at the end stopped the study at 250v rather than milgrams 450 and started at 15v rather tjan milgrams 45, he also agve ptpps the chance to leave 3 times with the 50$
this is a strength as it means burger can be repliacted as it has no ethical critismcs
