Bunsen burner Flashcards
Correctly label a bunsen burner and state the steps to safely light/use one.
Why do we need a heatproof mat?
To prevent the Bunsen burner from burning the table.
What is the first step to lighting a bunsen burner?
Put on safety glasses.
What is the second step to lighting a bunsen burner?
Connect gas tube to the gas pipe (making sure the gas is switched off).
What is the third step to lighting a bunsen burner?
Close the air hole.
What is the fourth step to lighting a bunsen burner?

What is the last(5th) step to lighting a bunsen burner?

What does the air hole do?
Opening the air hole on a Bunsen burner allows more oxygen to enter, creating a roaring flame. Closing the air hole results in less oxygen entering the burner, producing a safety flame.
What colour is the safety flame?
Yellow
Why is it called the safety flame?
Because the flame can be seen more easily when the Bunsen burner is not in use.
What is the ‘nozzle’ on a bunsen burner?
The nozzle on a Bunsen burner is the small, narrow tube at the top of the burner where the gas is released.
What is the ‘barrel’ on a bunsen burner?
The barrel on a Bunsen burner is the vertical metal tube that extends from the base to the top of the burner.
What is the ‘collar’ on a bunsen burner?
The collar on a Bunsen burner is an adjustable metal or plastic ring located at the base of the barrel which can close or open the air hole.
