Bulk Material Properties Flashcards
What is the difference between surface and bulk properties?
surface is similar throughout while bulk has different properties inside than outside
What is a surface?
the boundary region between two adjacent bulk phases, exist between 2 phases, all interactions have interfaces but not all are surfaces
Surface characteristics depend on what?
the topography, 3D geography
What is a surface property?
physical and chemical characteristics of the surface of a material
dictate interaction between the environment and the material
What are surface property examples?
roughness reactivity tension surface layers viscosity color
What are bulk properties?
intrinsic, extrinsic, microstructure, optical properties
What are intrinsic properties?
properties that depend primarily on the composition of the material density heat capacity melting and boiling point state of matter odor
What are extrinsic properties?
depends on the amount of matter present volume mass weight size length area
What are microstructure properties?
depends on types of atoms and their arrangements
different at different scales
What thermal properties?
thermal conductivity
thermal expansion
What are optical properties?
color
refractive index
transparency
