Bulk And Tapped Density Flashcards
What do bulk and tapped density help understand powders?
Assess the flowability
Bulk density
The volume of the powder has not been affected by external forces or conditions. Accounting for void areas.
Tapped density
- Is the bulk density of a powder after it has been tapped.
- void will be rid of
- Tapping helps to simulate the compaction that occurs during transportation or handling of powders.
- tap until volume doesn’t change anymore
How do you calculate density and in what units?
D=M/V (mass/volume)
Units: g/ml
Carr’s Index
Is a parameter used to assess the flowability of a powder and is calculated based on both density and tap density measurements
How do you calculate carr’s index?
(Ptapped - Pbulk)/(Ptapped) * 100
Gives percentage
Lower Carr’s index indicates
Better flow properties, meaning the powder can easily move and fill containers
Higher Carr’s index indicates
Poor flow properties, which may result in issues like arching or bridging during manufacturing
Hausner ratio
Another parameter, like Carr’s index, that assesses flowability
Tapped powder has _________ density
Higher density
Untapped powder has _________ density
Lower density
The higher the bulk density, the ________ the % pore space
Lower
What instrument do you use for bulk and tapped density?
Sotax TD1 (and also need VBSE hood)
