Building Reg & Code Flashcards
What is the most noteable federal level law?
ADA regulates the removal of barriers for the physically disabled. Based off international code council ICC A117.1. Not a code or standard but civil rights legislation
What is model code
Primary model code is international building code produced by ICC
Why are building codes written?
To protect healthy, safety and welfare of public. model codes are based on “least acceptable risk” minimum level of protection
What is ASTM
Publishes test procedures and standards
What is NFPA
Publishes codes and standards around fire prevention, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, hazardous materials, firefighting etc
ASTM E119
Standard test method for fire test of building construction and materials
What are the two parts of ASTM E119?
1) measures heat transfer through assembly
2) measures hose stream to simulate how well assembly stands up to and impact from falling debris and cooling eroding effects of water
What is NFPA 252
Standard methods of fire test of door assemblies
What is NFPA 257
Standard on fire test for window and glass block assemblies
What’s ASTM E84
Surface Burning characteristics of building materials aka Steiner tunnel test
ASTM E84
Classes of flame spread
Class A most resistant
Specific optical density of smoke generated by solid materials
ASTM e662
NFPA 253
Critical radiant flux of floor covering systems using radiant heat energy source
ASTM D2859
Standard for ignition characteristics of finish textile flooring aka METHENAMINE PILL TEST
