What are main objectives of HASAWA?
Four main objectives are:
1) To secure the health , safety and welfare of everyone at work.
2) To protect the general public from risks due to work activities
3) To control the use , handling storage and transportation of explosives and highly flammable substances.
4) To control the release of noxious or offensive substances into atmosphere.
What is the difference between terms absolute and reasonably practicable when discussing duties in legislation?
Absolute means requirements must be met regardless of cost or other implications unless a qualifying termis added, such as whenever reasonably practicable.
Reasonably practicable means that you are required to consider risks involved in undertaking a particular work activity. However if risks are minimal and costs or technical difficulty of eliminating the risks are high, it might not be reasonably practicable to do so.

What are the roles of HSE inspectors?
Inspectors are given powers of entry, examination , and investigation to enable them to enforce HASAWA.
What is the remit of HSE inspectors?
They can
- Enter premises to carry out investigations and take measurements, photographs, recordings , and samples.
- They require premises left undis turned .
- Ask questions
- check records
- demand the seizure , dismantling neutralising or destruction of any machinery , equipment , material or substance that is likely to cause immediate serious personal injury.
- issue improvement notice
- issue a prohibition notice.
What is an improvement notice?
Document. It requires the responsible person to put right any minor hazards or infringements of legislation within a specified period of time.
What is the prohibition notice?
It requires responsible person to stop immediately any activities that are likely to result in serious personal injury. This ban continues until the situation is corrected. An appeal may be made to an industrial tribunals.
