Building construction Flashcards
Balloon-frame construction
an older type of wood frame construction in which the wall studs extend vertically from the basement of a structure to the roof without any fire stops
curtain wall
Nonbearing exterior walls attached to the outside of the building.
fire enclosure
a fire rated assembly used to enclose a vertical opening such as a stairwell, elevator shaft, and chase for building utilities.
fire partition
an interior wall extending form floor to the underside of the floor above
fire wall
are designed to limit the spread of fire from one side of the wall to the other side. extends from the foundation up to and through the roof
Laminated glass
a window with a thin layer of plastic between two layers of glass.
party wall
a wall constructed between two properties
Spalling
Chipping or pitting of concrete or masonry surfaces
tempered glass
a safety glass that is heat treated so that, under stress or fire, it breaks into small pieces
Truss
a collection of lightweight structural components joined in a triangular configuration to support either floors or roofs
Type I Construction
Fire Resistive
-made of noncombustible materials that have a specified fire resistance
Type II Construction
Noncombustible
-made of noncombustible materials without fire resistance
Type III Construction
Ordinary
-exterior walls made of noncombustible or limited-combustible materials, but with interior floors and walls made of combustible materials.
Type IV Construction
Heavy Timber
-made of noncombustible or limited-combustible exterior walls, and interior walls and floors made of large-dimension combustible materials.
Type V Construction
Wood Frame
-exterior, interior, floors, and roof made of wood
What are the 3 types of tusses
Parallel chord truss
Pitched chord truss
Bowstring truss
100 feet of unprotected steel expands how much when heated to 1100 degrees
9 inches
what are two types of door construction
Solid core and hollow-core doors
what is Laminated glass
2 Pieces of glass with plastic in between (safety glass)
typically used as vehicle windshields
What is Tempered Glass
heat treated glass, making it 4X stronger. breaks into small pellets without sharp edges
Double-Hung window
two movable sashes
Jalousie Windows
made of adjustable sections of tempered glass that overlap one another encased in a metal frame and operated by a hand wheel or crank.
awning windows
similar to jalousie windows but have only a few panels of glass.
Casement windows
have a steal or wood frame and open away from the building with a crank mechanism. (avoid for forcible entry, very difficult)
projected windows
similiar to casement windows only sideways, wider, shorter, typically found in commercial buildings or basements.
