What did Buddha want to find out?
He wanted to find out why people suffered and how it could end.
When did he leave his life of luxury?
When he was 29 years old.
What did he do after he left his wife and newborn son?
He began his search.
How long did he go traveling and meditating?
He went for 7 years.
What did he do for 7 years?
He meditated and traveled.
What did Buddha do after he traveled for 7 years?
He began sharing it.
What are his teachings recorded in?
They are recorded in a collection of texts called the Sutras.
What are the 4 noble truths?
- All people suffer and know sorrow
- Desires cause suffering
- End suffering by eliminating desires
- Eliminate desire by following the Eightfold Path.
What is karma?
A cycle of cause and effect. It is what happens to a person as a result of their previous actions.
What is samsara?
The endless cycle of reincarnation. It includes birth, death, re-birth, and re-death.
What could a person following the Eightfold Path achieve?
They could achieve Nirvana.
What is the Eightfold Path?
- Know truth
- Resist evil
- Say nothing to hurt others
- Respect Life
- Work for the goods of others
- Free mind from evil
- Control your thoughts
- Practice meditation
What is Nirvana?
Nirvana is the freedom from reincarnation and being at one with the universe. Anyone regardless of class could achieve nirvana.
What is the Dharma Wheel?
The eight-spoked Dharma Wheel represented the Eightfold Path.
What is a mandala?
A mandala is a symbol that represents the universe.
What does Buddha mean?
Buddha means ‘The enlightened one.’
Who is “the Buddha”.
Siddharta Gautama is referred to as ‘the Buddha”.
What does Buddhism recognize about Buddhas?
That they came before Siddharta Gautama and after him.
What does the lotus flower symbolize?
The lotus flower symbolizes rising out of the muddy, murky waters of desires and attachments and becoming pure of mind, speech, and body.
