Temple
a place where Buddhists come together to worship or practise.
Gompa
A hall or building where Tibetan Buddhists meditate.
Stupa
A small building in a monastery where holy relics are stored.
Buddha Rupa
The statue of the Buddha to provide a focal point in meditation.
Often sitting in a cross-legged position.
Shrine
An area for meditation with a Buddha Rupa (or a Bodhisattva).
Vihara
The Vihara is a Buddhist monastery which is a place where monks and nuns live.
Chanting
Rhythmic recitation of important words, syllables or phrases.
Mala
A set of prayer buds Buddhists use to recite prayers.
Mantra
A set phrase or syllable Buddhist recites.
Puja
Buddhist worship.
Why do Buddhists make offerings?
To bring about good ‘karma’. This is called ‘merit-making’.
What does a flower represent?
That nothing is permanent. Annica.
What does the water represent?
Purity. It cleanses the Buddhist’s minds of greed, hatred and ignorance (the three poisons).
What does the candle represent?
Brightness/Enlightenment.
Light drives away darkness.
What does the incense represent?
Purity in actions, deeds and thoughts.
