Bodhi/bo
Bo tree, the tree of enlightenment
Buddha
The enlightened or the awakened
Theravada
Believed Buddha was a man. Devotees focus on the life of the monk Buddha.
Mahayana
Emphasized the great or universal means of reaching enlightenment. Emphasis on multiple Buddhas; majorityof Buddhas were this.
Tahna/trishna
Cause of suffering (2 noble truth). The desire that leads to suffering
Dukkha
Suffering
Bodhissatva/bodhisatta
People who have qualified to enter Nirvana, but out of compassion for others, do not until everyone has reached Nirvana.
Nirvana/nibbana
The state of releasing oneself from suffering. Answers question “where are we going?”
Samsara
“Wandering across, not necesarily reincarnation” Suffering will continue universally
Kamma/karma
Importance of action, for ones action is followed by the deserved pain or pleasure. Os primarily psychological
Sangha
Buddhist monastic order. Accepted both monks and nuns.
Damma/dharma
Law taught by Buddha
Anatma/anatta
“No soul” or in sanskrit “no atman”
Skandhas
The five groups of experience: physical body, feelings, sensations, reactions/impulses, consciousness
