Four noble truths
- Suffering is universal- pain sickness and death are all inevitable
- Origin of suffering- desire and non-virtue (ex- hatred)
3, Cessation- to stop and crish virtue - To end desire, follow the eightfold path
Gautama
Born in napal son of Hindu king lived in luxury until he saw suffering. He left his life to be an ascetic for six years- monk who deprives himself of all worldly pleasures. He went under a tree and for 49 days he say under a tree trying to find the cause of suffering and how to end it. He ten became enlightened- he understood the cause and cure of suffering. He became known as Buddha or enlightened one. He discovered a middle way ( not asceticism or self indulgence
Eightfold path
A practical guide to right conduct by stressing good qualities such as kindness compassion etc.
Difference between Hinduism and Buddhism

Theravada
“Teachings of the elders” u need to b a monk in order to achieve nirvana. U find nirvana alone without god. Do not worship Buddha or god. Prevalent in south east Asia
Mahayana
“Greater vehicle” need help of others to obtain nirvana and it can be done in different ways. Many follow teachings of bodhisattvas. They worship Buddha and other enlightened ones
Bodhisattvas
someone who has already been enlightened but has willingly delayed nirvana to help others
Dalai Lama
Tibetan Buddhists living bodhisattva ( they are a reincarnation of the Buddha of compassion)
Enlightenment and nirvana
You receive enlightenment (crush desire non virtue) while you are living and u reach nirvana (heaven basically) when u die after being enlightened
