What is the Buddha?
Buddha means an enlightened person
Buddha also refers to the man who started the religion of Buddhism
What is Dhamma?
The teachings of the Buddha
eg the four noble truths
What is Sangha?
A community of Buddhists
What were the four sights that the Buddha saw when he left his palace?
1) Old age
2) Death
3) Sickness
4) A holy man
What is an Ascetic lifestyle?
When you punish your body to try to achieve certain spiritual goals.
What is Dukkha?
The idea that life is unsatisfactory.
What is Tanha?
‘Thirst’ or ‘craving’
What is Nibbana?
The wisdom that overcomes ignorance.
What are the three poisons?
Hatred, greed and ignorance
What are the four noble truths?
1) There is suffering
2) Suffering is caused by wanting
3) Suffering ends when you end your want for things and achieve Nibbana.
4) The way to Nibbana is the eighfold path.
What is the Eightfold Path?
The path Buddhists follow to achieve Nibbana or Enlightenment.
What are steps one and two of the eightfold path about?
Steps 1 and 2 are about Wisdom: how you see the world
What are steps three, four and five of the eightfold path about?
Steps 3, 4 and 5 are about Morality: how you treat others
What are steps six, seven and eight of the eightfold path about?
Steps 6, 7 and 8 are about Meditation: how you train your mind to be calm and see the world accurately
