BT Pg. 337-356 Flashcards
Electromagnetic waves with the longest wavelengths and lowest frequencies; carry signals to your radio, television and cell phones
Radio Waves
these waves heat the food we eat and have shorter wavelengths than radio waves; also used for radar images like the Doppler radar used in weather forecasts
Microwaves
3rd longest wave, can be felt as heat. Your television remote control also transmits this type of wave
Infrared Waves
the only type of electromagnetic waves that we can see; seen as the colors of the rainbow
Visible Light
a type of energy that comes to Earth from the Sun, can damage skin and cause cancer, and is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer
Ultraviolet Radiation
waves that are so powerful they can pass easily through the skin and allow doctors to look at our bones
X-Rays
Electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies; generated by radioactive atoms in nuclear explosions. Some doctors use these waves to kill cancer cells.
Gamma Rays
the arrangement of the different kinds of electromagnetic radiation according to their wavelengths and frequencies
Electromagnetic Spectrum
How we perceive light of a certain wavelength or frequency
Color
a mixture of all the colors of LIGHT in the rainbow
White Light
a transparent or translucent object that splits light by frequencies, often a triangular in shape
Prism
what happens when light waves bounce off an object
Reflection
The organ of the body that detects light radiation
Eye
An especially sharply focused beam of light
Laser
Black objects ___________ all colors of light
Absorb
