What is ethnocentrisms?
The belief that one’s own group or subculture is inherently superior to other groups or cultures
What is stereotyping?
Standardized idea about a social group
What is prejudice?
Negative attitudes we hold about people who belong to groups other than our own
What is discrimination?
Behaviors resulting in unequal treatment on group membership
What is disparate treatment?
Treating one employee or group of employees less favorable than others for discriminatory reasons
What is the impact of disparate treatment?
A discriminatory effect on a group of employees (typically protected class) caused by apparently, nondiscriminatory policy or practice
What are types of workplace discrimination? (8)
Retaliation, disability, race, sex, age, national origin, colour, religion
What is implicit bias?
The attitudes and stereotypes that subconsciously influence our thoughts, actions or decisions.
Can be favorable or unfavorable
Cause us to have feelings and attitudes toward people based on characteristics such as age, race, ethnicity, gender, etc
What is a monoculture?
‘A culture that accepts only one way of doing things and one set of values and beliefs’
What is the glass ceiling?
‘Invisible barrier that separates women and minorities from top management positions’
What are some statistics on workplace bullying and harassment in NZ?
Prevalence of racial harassment = 39% all workers, 62% pacific peoples, 62% Asian peoples, 52% Maori
How do you create a safe environment?
Capacity building and training (develop cultural competencies and good communication), recruitment process (undergone training, diverse panel, targets), policies (channels for feedback, accessibility, celebrate diversity, align with Treaty of Waitangi and Tikanga values)
What can you do personally to encourage diversity?
learning/education, open mind, understand others – equality, shared some personal experience, mindful of prejudice and discrimination
