brown squared syndrome Flashcards
what is brown squared syndrome?
anatomical disruption of nerve fibre tracts in one half of the spinal cord.
what are clinical features of brown sequard syndrome?
Ipsilateral hemiplegia
Ipsilateral loss of proprioception and vibration
Contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation
what are the lateral corticospinal tracts responsible for?
motor movement- they are descending tracts
where do corticospinal tracts deccusate?
the medulla of the brain stem- injury results in ipsilateral loss
what are the main sensory tracts?
the dorsal column- responsible for fine touch and proprioception
and
the anterior and lateral spinothalamic tract responsible for pain and temperature sensation
where do the dorsal columns decussate?
- the medulla of the brain- so injury results in ipsilateral loss
where do the spinothalamic tracts decussate?
at the level of the spine- leading to contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation if injured
