“Built like a gorilla but less timid,” STANZA 1
Imagery, this man is very large and strong. He isn’t timid because of his job, he is confidently violent because he has to be. He is a protector of the territory.
“With two hieroglyphs in his face that mean trouble,” STANZA 1
This shows us that the cop is unpredictable/ hard to read. He has dangerous emotionless eyes. He is “mean” and is no stranger to violence.
“This morning when he said ‘see you, babe’ to his wife he hoped it, he truly hoped it” STANZA 1
He hopes he will be home but there is no guarantee. He works in a dangerous place. The repetition of “hoped it” Shows the love he has for his wife.
“Should the tissue tear, should he plunge through into violence” STANZA 2
There is always the anticipation of violence due to previous experience. Tissues are easily torn suggesting that violence is to be expected. “Plunge” suggests dramatic descend.
“And who would be who have to be his victims?”
This suggests that the cop will be forced to be violent, in order to complete his job he has to be dangerous. The word “victim” suggests that there is people being hurt that don’t deserve it as a part of his job. He needs to act like the people he is trying to stop.
