Brooklyn Cop Flashcards
“The thin tissueover violence”
Metaphor - suggests that violence can break out at any moment. Peace is fragile and delicate. Shows importance of cop keeping tissuefrom ripping
“He hoped it, he truly hoped it”
Repetition if ‘hoped’ shows that the cliche of “see you babe” wasn’t just a passing statement but a meaningful one
“See you, babe”
Word choice - cliched language, worn out, meaningless phrase to address his wife. Almost thoughtless, like something from a show or a movie
“Built like a gorilla”
Simile - compares the cop to a dangerous animal known for its physical strength. Shows the cop’s physical potential for danger
“Two hieroglyphs”
Metaphor - presents cop’s eyes as symbols that are hard to read. Suggests tough exterior. Could also suggest physical scars
“Pheobe’s Whamburger and Louie’s place.”
Word choice - American connotations, Mafia hangouts, disreputable places, suggests aggression and violence
“Who would be him,”
Rhetorical Question - who would do this job, or want to be this violent, inhuman, person.
“home”
Word choice - highlights sense of self and fear that ye may lose his home via his job, that the violence might one day change him lots. Emphasises the fear of the cop that he might not return home to his wife
“victims”
Word choice - suggests that someone who gets on the wrong side of the cop would be a victim. It isn’t just the cop who is at risk of violence. The cop himself can act violently
