Define Leadership
To influence the thoughts and behaviour of other in a deliberate direction in order to achieve a desired object / to turn a group of individuals into a team to achieve something they couldn’t do on their own
What are the 5 things an effective leader does?
- Creates an inspiring vision of the future
- Motivates and inspire people to engage with that vision
- Manages delivery of the vision
- Coaches and builds a team so that it is more effective at achieving the vision
Why is leadership useful for administrative purposes?
Controlling a group is much easier with a leader than with many individuals trying to manage themselves
When is leadership necessary?
Leadership is required to perform a task that cannot be achieved by an individual alone
How does leadership influence initiative?
An effective leader will inspire a sense of positive initiative which means the team members are forward thinking and more prepared to deliver solutions to problems that arise
How does leadership influence innovativeness?
Good leaders improve an individual’s ability to find alternative solutions or more efficient way of doing things
Why is pro-activeness important for a leader?
Proactive individuals are those who are identified as being reliable and successfully executing written plans proves that they are able to take control of situations rather than just responding to them

What is the ‘qualities approach’ to leadership?
The view that leaders are natural born to lead .e.g. the Feudal system stated that those born of nobility were born to lead
What is the ‘situational approach’ to leadership?
The view that whoever is best equipped to handle the task should be the leader as they will know what needs to happen to complete it and will be effective delegaters
What is the disadvantage of the situational approach to leadership?
As the task becomes more and more complex it is unlikely one person will be equipped to handle it
What is the ‘functional approach’ to leadership?
Focusses on the actions of the leader rather than the person that they are. This is important because who a leader is depends on the situation
What are the two ways a leader can gain authority?
They can be appointed by the team in which case the team gives them authority or they are appointed by a member in a higher position of authority than them
What is a leader given and what do they need to earn?
They are given responsibility but they need to earn respect
