Bronze Beach Flashcards
Definition of Tides
The rise and fall of the surface of the ocean
Cause of Tides
Gravitational pull of the moon and (to a lesser extent) the sun
Definition of Spring Tide
Lowest low tides and the highest high tides; the difference between them is greatest
Cause of Spring Tide
Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned
Definition of Neap Tide
Highest low tides and the lowest high tides; the difference between them is smallest
Cause of Neap Tide
Sun, Moon and Earth are out of alignment
Frequency of tides
Six hours of flood (rising tide) and six hours of ebb (falling tide); each cycle is ~12 hours
Definition of Cliffs
Vertical or near vertical rock faces on the coastline
Definition of Erosion
Gradual destruction of the cliff face by wind, rain and freeze-thaw erosion
Hazards of Cliffs
Slip, trip and fall, falling rock caused by crumbling cliffs and pathways; cut-off hazard by flooding tide
Definition of Offshore Winds
Winds blowing away from the shore and out to sea
Hazards of Offshore Winds
Bathers/inflatables can be blown out to sea; surface chop makes it difficult for people to swim to the shore
Examples of Man Made Structures

Piers, supports, sea walls, flood defences, groynes, erosion defences
Hazards of Man Made Structures
Slip, trip and fall hazard; rip currents and irregular water flow; irregular seabed composition
Hazards of Weevers and Rays

Venomous spines can pierce foot and cause pain for 2 hours, ongoing discomfort
Hazards of Sea Urchins

Spines can pierce foot and break off when stepped on
Hazards of Jellyfish

Stinging cells sting upon contact with skin; range from mild tingling to very painful
Treating Weever and Ray stings
Remove spines from skin; wash area with hot soapy water (CARE scald hazard); bathe area with hot water for 30 minutes; hospitalise casualty
Treating Jellyfish and Sea Urchin stings
Remove tentacles from skin using first aid gloves and sticky tape; bathe whttp://www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/image/0008/29762/Water_safety_sign_Red_and_yellow_flag.jpgound in vinegar or sea water; apply cold packs for 5-15 minutes; hospitalise casualty
