Human Ecological Model
involves interrelationships between humans and their environments
4 basic structures
- Microsystem
- Mesosystem
- Exosystem
- Macrosystem
Microsystem
refers to the activities and relationships with significant others.
Child's developments depends on the interactions among: family (primary socializer) school peer group community media
Mesosystem
Intermediate - consist of LINKAGES and interrelationships between two or more of a developing person’s microsystems.
Exosystem
Outside - setting that children are not active participants in, but it still affects them. (Ex: School Board)
Macrosystem
Large - consists of the society and subculture to which a person belongs.
Ethnicity - ascribed attributes from family
Culture - learned behavior
Low-Context Macro
Characterized by rationality, practicality, competition, individuality and progress.
(Ex: Steve Jobs)
- valuing progress
- fragmented relationships
- try to control nature
High-Context Macro
Characterized by intuitiveness, emotionality, cooperation, group identity and tradition.
(Ex: Amish)
- harmony with nature and others in social network
- valuing tradition
Chronosystem
temporal changes in the ecological system or individual over time, producing new condition that affect development
- tech changes
- Sig. societal events (9/11)
Normative Event
Typical events; experienced by majority
Non-normative Event
Not typical events; experienced by minority
Proximal Environment
person, family, neighborhood (micros and mesos)
Distal Environment
person, community, society (exo and macro)
Interaction Effect
