By regular sputum surveillance
What are the main organisms that cause infection bronchiectasis?
Haemophilus influenzae Streptococcus pneumoniae Pseudomonas aeruginosa
What is bronchiectasis?
Chronic inflammation of the bronchi and bronchioles leading to permanent dilatation and thinning of these airway
What are the 6 causes of it?
CF, TB, Pneumonia, pertussis, measles, bronchial obstruction
What are symptoms of it?
Persistent cough; copious purulent sputum; intermit- tent haemoptysis.
What are signs of it?
Finger clubbing; coarse inspiratory crepitations; wheeze
What investigations are carried out?
Sputum culture, CXR, HR-CT, spirometry, bronchoscopy
What does CXR show?
Cystic shadows, thickened bronchial walls (tramline and ring shadows)
How is it managed?
Chest physiotherapy, mucolytics, antibiotics
