what is bronchiectasis?

A

congenital or acquired disorder of the large bronchi

  • Permanent, abnormal dilation and destruction of bronchial walls
  • May be caused by recurrent inflammation or infection

what is highly associated with bronchiectasis?

A

Cystic Fibrosis!!!

-causes 50% of all cases

what is the main symptom of bronchiectasis?

A

Chronic daily cough and viscid sputum
-THICK AND STICKY SPUTUM

Have to get chest and back pounded because it is so thick and sticky

what types of infections do CF patients get?

A

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections!!!

pseudomonas is almost never seen seen in resp infections, except for CF

A

cysts of the bronchial wall -> destructive bronchiectasis
