what is bronchiectasis?
congenital or acquired disorder of the large bronchi
- Permanent, abnormal dilation and destruction of bronchial walls
- May be caused by recurrent inflammation or infection
what is highly associated with bronchiectasis?
Cystic Fibrosis!!!
-causes 50% of all cases
what is the main symptom of bronchiectasis?
Chronic daily cough and viscid sputum
-THICK AND STICKY SPUTUM
Have to get chest and back pounded because it is so thick and sticky
what types of infections do CF patients get?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections!!!
pseudomonas is almost never seen seen in resp infections, except for CF
what will you see on CT scan for bronchiectasis?
cysts of the bronchial wall -> destructive bronchiectasis
how do you treat bronchiectasis?
oral abx x 10 days
what is the gold standard for diagnosing CF?
sweat chloride test
