Democracy
The democratic system should be allowed access to by all and everyone should be able to vote.
Individual Liberty
Everyone has the right to act, believe and express themselves freely
The rule of the law
Everyone should follow the law and no one is above the law. The law applies to everybody equally
Mutual respect
Respect is shown and reciprocated to all people
Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
We accept that all people are free to hold whatever beliefs they choose.
What are the Five British Values
Democracy, Individual Liberty, The rule of law, Mutual respect and Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
Three important principles
(TIP)
Equality, Freedom, Participation
(TIP) Equality
Everyone should be treated equally regardless of their faith, sexuality and race.
(TIP) Freedom
People are free to make their own choices about how they live their own lives.
(TIP) Participation
People are involved in decisions that affect their lives. Through participation people can
effect change to their communities and wider society. Participation could be through voting or taking part in
community events or attending a protest.
Censorship
This suppression / or banning of information and / or ideas by preventing publication.
IPSO
Independent Press Standards Organisation. This was set up in 2014 after the phone hacking scandal to regulate the press.
Immigration
Many voters felt that the UK would be in a better position to control who enters the country if it left the EU
Sovereignty
Some ‘leave’ voters believe that decisions about the UK should be made in the UK and not be controlled by laws passed in Europe.
Identity
Some voters in the UK reportedly feel less ‘European’ than citizens in other EU countries.
The European Union
The EU is a group of 27 countries in Europe. These countries came together after WW2. to make things better, easier and safer for people. The EU is both a political and trading union. Key features of the EU include: Single currency (the euro), free movement of people, democracy, human rights and many more.
