It was hard to get to. It was on the East coast of Britain which was farther than the other ports and you had to travel up the river Thames (hard)

Due to the Napoleonic wars. The trading routes would have been blocked in the English Channel and the other ports became more popular

In 1707, Scotland gained formal access to the transatlantic slave trade. Scottish planters (especially sugar and tobacco) began to settle in the colonies, generating much of their wealth through enslaved labour.

Bristol used the money to make new buildings in city centre. Industries such as glass making copper smelting and sugar refining grew as a result of the slave trade
Bristol merchants had close relationships with slave traders in west Africa. They trusted them more than other ports
Being on the east coast it made Bristol an important port
Bristol supplied slaves to England’s largest sugar-producing island (Jamaica)
